 Tanganyika Lake South Kivu district

Lake Tanganyika is located in eastern Zaire, in the South Kivu district. It is 1600 kilometers long and 1460 meters deep. Some deep vents were detected in this lake several years ago (Refs. 1-2). We left Paris on February 13 th of 1996 to land at Bujumbura , the capital of Burundi. After few days of preparation, we crossed the border between Zaire and Burundi and reached Uvira town. We travelled on the lake by zodiac from Uvira to the site of Pemba.

There we camped on the beach near a small village. We were fifteen scientists from different countries (Canadian, French, Zairan and Burundi) surrounded by a crowd of curious children .

Everywhere we looked, we could see the Burundi shore on the other side of the Tanganyika Lake.
